Do I Need a 4x4 to Visit La Fortuna, Arenal, and Casa Venado?

One of the first questions we get from guests planning their trip is about what kind of car to rent. It’s a great question, because the right vehicle can make all the difference in feeling confident and free to explore.

For most travelers visiting La Fortuna and Casa Venado, a 4x4 is not strictly necessary, but it is highly recommended for comfort, confidence, and the freedom to explore. The main highways are paved, but a vehicle with higher clearance (like an SUV) makes navigating the beautiful rural roads much more enjoyable.

The Short Answer: Recommended, But Not Required

Let's break that down. Can you make it to our front door in a small sedan? Yes, you can. The primary routes are paved, and the final country lanes to our private vacation home are navigable with a regular car if you take it slow. Many visitors do just that and have a wonderful time.

However, we almost always suggest an intermediate SUV or a 4x4. Why? Because your trip isn’t just about getting from point A to point B. It’s about the freedom to say, “What’s down that little road?” or to visit a rustic local soda without worrying about bottoming out. A higher-clearance vehicle provides peace of mind, which is what a vacation is all about.

Driving from the Airport to La Fortuna

Whether you’re flying into San José (SJO) or Liberia (LIR), the main arteries leading to the Arenal area are paved and in good condition. You will not be forging rivers or climbing muddy tracks on these primary routes.

• From Liberia (LIR): The drive is typically a bit easier, following Route 1 to Cañas, then Route 142 around Lake Arenal. This is a beautiful, well-paved road famous for its lake and volcano views.

The Road to Casa Venado: What to Expect

Once you leave the main highway, the adventure begins! Casa Venado is located in the quiet countryside hills about 45 minutes from the bustle of La Fortuna. The road from La Fortuna to the town of Venado is paved.

The final few kilometers to the house are on a gravel country lane. It’s a typical rural Costa Rican road—not a treacherous off-road track, but not a smooth highway either. It can be bumpy and uneven in places, which is where higher clearance comes in handy. A standard car can handle it, but you'll need to drive slowly and carefully to avoid potholes. An SUV simply glides over these bumps much more comfortably.

Why a 4x4 Shines in the Green Season

As we’re in the green season right now, this is especially relevant. From May to November, afternoon showers are a near-daily occurrence. These rains keep the landscape spectacularly lush and green, but they can also make unpaved roads slick or muddy.

While the main roads drain well, smaller side roads can get tricky. A 4x4 gives you the traction and confidence to explore without hesitation. • Economy/Compact Sedan: The most budget-friendly choice. It will get you to La Fortuna and most main sites, but you'll need to be cautious and slow on the roads around Venado.
• Intermediate/Compact SUV (4x2): This is often the sweet spot. You get the high clearance of an SUV without the added cost of 4WD. For most visitors, this is an excellent and cost-effective choice.
• Standard/Full-Size SUV (4x4): The premium option for maximum flexibility and peace of mind. If you plan to explore a lot of backroads, visit during the rainiest months, or simply want the most capable vehicle, this is it.

Tips for Renting a Car in Costa Rica

Renting a car here can have a few surprises if you’re not prepared. Keep these tips in mind to ensure a smooth process.

• Mandatory Insurance is Real: The price you see online is not the final price. All rentals require mandatory third-party liability insurance (SLI, TPL, or similar). This can add a significant amount to your daily rate. Budget for it.
• Book in Advance: Especially if you want a 4x4 SUV, book well ahead of your trip. They are the most popular models and can sell out, particularly during peak travel times.
• Inspect Your Vehicle: Before you drive off the lot, walk around the car and take a video or photos of any existing scratches or dings. Check the tires, including the spare.
• Use a Credit Card for the Deposit: Rental agencies will place a large security deposit (often over $1,000) on your credit card. Debit cards are often not accepted for this.
