Arenal Volcano Adventures: A Complete Guide

By the Casa Venado team

Arenal Volcano viewed from The Springs Resort

La Fortuna is the adventure capital of Costa Rica, and you've got it all about 45 minutes from Casa Venado. The volcano hasn't erupted since 2010, but the whole region built up around it is still going strong — hanging bridges through the canopy, zip lines over waterfalls, ATV trails, horseback rides, and one of the country's most famous waterfalls.

Here's how we'd sort it. Pick two or three of these for your trip — don't try to do all of them in a day.

Mistico Hanging Bridges

A 3 km loop through primary rainforest with 16 bridges, 6 of them hanging high in the canopy. Easy walking, big payoff — toucans, sloths, monkeys, and a clear view of the volcano on a good day. About $30 for self-guided, $60 with a naturalist guide (worth it for the wildlife).

Best in the early morning when animals are active. Allow 2 to 3 hours.

Sky Adventures: Zip Lining, Sky Tram & Sky Walk

The biggest zip line operation in the area — a series of long, fast lines over a rainforest canyon with the volcano in view. There's also a Sky Tram gondola if you want the height without the adrenaline, and a set of hanging bridges (Sky Walk) you can add on.

Combo packages run roughly $90–$130. Good for older kids and adults; minimum age for zip is usually 5 with a guide.

ATV & Buggy Tours

Several operators run 3–4 hour ATV tours through farm roads, river crossings, and lookouts above La Fortuna. About $130 per single ATV, less per person on a double. Muddy, loud, ridiculous fun.

If you want the same terrain without driving yourself, the side-by-side buggy tours hold the whole family in one vehicle with a guide driving.

La Fortuna Waterfall

A 70-meter waterfall down a steep set of 500 stairs (going back up is the workout). The pool at the bottom is great for swimming. Entry is around $18.

Go right at opening (8 AM) — by 10 AM it's packed and the parking is a mess. Bring water shoes; the rocks are slick.

Arenal 1968 & National Park Hikes

Arenal 1968 is a private trail that crosses an old lava flow from the 1968 eruption that buried the village of Tabacón. About 4 km, easy-moderate, with the best up-close volcano views in the area. ~$15 entry.

The official Arenal Volcano National Park is right next door and has similar lava-field trails. Both close at 4 PM. Combine with a hot springs stop afterward and you have a perfect day.

Wildlife: Sloths, Frogs & Night Tours

Bogarín Trail near downtown La Fortuna is the easiest sloth-spotting in the country — a flat hour-long walk where guides can almost guarantee you'll see 4–6 sloths plus toucans and caiman. About $30 with a guide.

Frog and night tours run at a few sanctuaries in the evening for $40–$50. Worth doing one night of your trip if you've got kids.

Whitewater Rafting

The Río Balsa runs Class II-III rapids — fun, splashy, family-friendly down to about age 8. Half-day trips with lunch run $75–$95. Operators pick you up in La Fortuna.

One last bit of advice: don't book your whole week in advance. The weather changes fast, and the best plan is usually "see what tomorrow looks like and pick the right thing." We're always happy to help you decide.
