Natural Hot Springs Near Casa Venado
By the Casa Venado team

Arenal Volcano doesn't just give the area its dramatic skyline — it heats the rivers. Mineral-rich water bubbles up all over the La Fortuna side, and you can choose your soak: a polished resort with tropical gardens and swim-up bars, or a free, locals-only river bend where the water is the same temperature for free.
All of these are within about 30–45 minutes of Casa Venado. Plan on the late afternoon or evening — that's when the air cools off and the contrast of warm water under the stars actually makes sense.
Tabacón Thermal Resort
The classic. Tabacón built a series of stone-lined pools and waterfalls fed by the same hot river that's been flowing here for centuries. Day passes run roughly $90–$110 with lunch or dinner included, and the gardens at night, lit up under the rainforest, are genuinely beautiful.
Good for couples and anyone who wants the full spa-resort experience. The grottos and the natural waterfall slide are the highlight.
The Springs Resort
Newer, larger, and arguably more fun for families — 28 pools spread across multiple levels, plus a few waterslides, a swim-up bar with volcano views, and a sloth and butterfly sanctuary on site. Day passes start at $110 (2-day pass) for adults and can include a meal.
If you go, do the upper pools at sunset and work your way down as it gets dark. The volcano view from the top deck is one of the best in the country.
Baldí Hot Springs
The big, social option — 25 pools, several waterslides, and the most affordable of the resort-style springs (around $50–$60 a day). Less polished than Tabacón or The Springs, but a lot of fun if you've got teenagers.
Ecotermales La Fortuna
A small, family-run alternative tucked into the rainforest just outside La Fortuna — four natural thermal pools fed by the same volcanic source as the big resorts, but with a fraction of the crowd. Day passes are around $44 for adults and $34 for kids, with an optional típico meal add-on.
Entry is capped and timed (morning, afternoon, and evening sessions), so it never feels packed. The vibe is quiet, jungle-shaded, and refreshingly low-key — no waterslides, no swim-up bars, just warm water and birdsong.
Free Hot Springs (El Choyín / Río Chollín)
Just outside the gates of Tabacón, the same hot river flows under the road. There's a small pull-off, a short trail down to the water, and a perfectly warm river you can sit in for free. Bring water shoes — the rocks are slick — and don't leave valuables in your car.
It's busy on weekends with local families. Go on a weekday afternoon and you'll often have a quiet pool to yourself.
Choose a hot spring that suits your style ranging from free to family friendly to ultra luxury. You won't be disappointed.
