River Tubing Around La Fortuna & Río Celeste

By the Casa Venado team

Tubing on the bright blue Río Celeste

Tubing in Costa Rica is a perfect activity for a hot afternoon: you're in the water, you're in the shade of the jungle, and someone else is doing the driving. There are two solid options near Casa Venado, each with a different vibe.

Tubing on the Río Celeste

This is the one you've seen photos of — drifting down the same impossibly blue water that runs through Tenorio National Park, but on the stretch outside the park where swimming is allowed.

Most tours run 1.5 to 2 hours on the water with mild Class I-II rapids. Kid-safe (usually 6 and up), about $50–$70 per person including transport, gear, and a snack. Several operators run trips out of Bijagua, about 45 minutes from the ranch.

Tubing on the Río Balsa (La Fortuna)

Closer to home (about 45 minutes) and slightly more active — Class II rapids, a few small bumps, and a stretch of calm jungle floating in between. Around $60 per person, lunch usually included.

Good choice if you want adventure but aren't ready for full whitewater rafting. The same operators run rafting trips on the same river for the next step up.

What to bring

Swimsuit, rashguard or t-shirt, water shoes or sandals with back straps (flip-flops will get lost), and a small dry bag if you want your phone for photos. Most tours include a helmet, life vest, and the tube itself.

Sunscreen, but the reef-safe kind — you're in a national-park watershed.

Best season

Doable year-round. Rivers run higher and faster from June through November, which is when the rapids are most fun. December through April the water is calmer and clearer — better with little kids.

Easiest way to spend a hot afternoon in Costa Rica. You'll be back at the ranch with a cold drink before sunset.
