• Budget: Staying in simpler accommodations, cooking most meals, focusing on free activities like hiking, and choosing one or two bigger tours.
• Mid-Range: Staying in a comfortable private home like Casa Venado, mixing meals at local sodas with cooking at home, renting a reliable SUV, and enjoying several popular tours.
• Premium: Staying at high-end resorts, dining out for most meals, booking private guides, and enjoying top-tier experiences like spa treatments and exclusive tours.

• Private Vacation Homes: A private home offers incredible value. While the nightly rate might look similar to a hotel, you get far more space, privacy, and—most importantly—a full kitchen. A 3-bedroom home like ours allows a family to spread out, relax by a private pool, and save hundreds of dollars by preparing breakfasts and packing lunches.

Transportation: Getting Here & Around

Unless you book shuttles for everything (which gets expensive), you’ll need a rental car to explore the Arenal region properly. Our countryside location in Venado is a peaceful escape, but a car is essential for getting to La Fortuna, the national parks, and other attractions.

• Rental Car: Expect to pay between $60 and $100+ per day for a mid-size SUV, including mandatory insurance. Prices are typically higher during the peak dry season (December-April). • Fuel: Gas is more expensive here than in North America. A week of exploring the Arenal area might cost you around $80-120 in fuel.

• Taxis & Shuttles: A taxi from La Fortuna to our area can be costly, and private shuttles between destinations often run $100-$200 per trip. Relying on them exclusively will quickly exceed the cost of a rental car.

Activity & Tour Costs: From Free to Splurge

This is where your budget can really flex. You could spend a week just enjoying the pool and quiet country roads around the house for free, or you could fill every day with ziplining, rafting, and guided hikes. Most families find a happy medium.

• Supermarkets: Shopping at local supermarkets like MegaSuper or Pali and cooking at your rental is the cheapest way to eat. You can stock up on breakfast items, snacks, pasta, and fresh tropical fruit for a fraction of restaurant prices.

• Sodas: These are small, family-run Costa Rican diners serving delicious and hearty traditional food. A casado (a set plate with rice, beans, salad, plantains, and a choice of meat) typically costs only $7-10. • Restaurants: La Fortuna has a wide range of tourist-focused restaurants, from pizza and pasta to steak and sushi. These are great for a special night out, but expect to pay prices closer to what you’d pay back home, around $20-40 per person for dinner.
