A perfect 5-day Arenal itinerary for families balances the region’s famous adventures with authentic local culture and essential downtime. We suggest dedicating days to Arenal’s icons like hanging bridges and waterfalls, a day for a unique cultural experience like a local farm visit, a day for a stunning natural wonder like Río Celeste, and buffer time for relaxing on the porch.

Day 1: Arrival, Settle In & Explore Venado

Welcome to the northern lowlands! We find the best way to start a trip is to ease into it. After you arrive at our private home and drop your bags, take a moment. Grab a cool drink, step out onto the deck, and just breathe. Let the kids run around and point out the sounds of the countryside and the view of Arenal Volcano in the distance.

Once you’re settled, a great first outing is a simple drive into our little town of Venado. It’s a small, friendly agricultural hub. You can stock up on essentials at the local pulpería (a small convenience store) or one of the small supermarkets. For dinner, skip the cooking and head to a classic local restaurant. We have a few favorite sodas in the area and are always happy to point you to the best one for a simple, delicious plate of casado.

This low-key first day helps everyone, especially kids, adjust to a new place without the pressure of a big tour. It’s about finding your footing and starting to feel the rhythm of rural Costa Rica.

Day 2: Arenal's Greatest Hits—Hanging Bridges & Waterfalls

Today is for the iconic Arenal views. After an early breakfast with coffee on the deck, make the scenic 45-minute drive toward La Fortuna. We recommend starting your day at one of the famous hanging bridge parks. Mistico Arenal Hanging Bridges Park is the most well-known and is fantastic for families, with well-maintained trails that get you right into the forest canopy.

Go early to beat the crowds and see more wildlife. The bridges offer a monkey's-eye view of the rainforest, and kids love the gentle sway high above the ground. Afterward, grab lunch in La Fortuna. Soda La Hormiga is a classic, no-frills spot loved by locals and visitors for its hearty, affordable food.

In the afternoon, head to the stunning La Fortuna Waterfall. Be prepared for the 500-step staircase down to the base—it's a workout on the way back up, but absolutely worth it. The power of the 70-meter cascade is incredible. There's a calmer area downstream where you can safely swim. It’s the perfect, refreshing end to a big day of exploring.

Day 3: A Taste of Country Life

After a big day of tourist attractions, today is about slowing down and connecting with the local culture that makes this area so special. The countryside around Venado is filled with working family farms, and many are happy to welcome visitors for a glimpse into their daily lives. It’s one of our favorite things to share with guests.

We can help arrange a visit to a nearby farm where you and your family can see how things are done the traditional way. Depending on the farm, you might see cows being milked by hand, learn how they make fresh, salty queso fresco (farmer's cheese), or even try your hand at patting out corn tortillas to be cooked on a wood-fired stove. Another wonderful option for today is a family-friendly horseback ride through the rolling green hills. We work with local families who have gentle horses suitable for all ages and experience levels. It's not a tourist trail ride; it’s a quiet journey through pastures and along country lanes, seeing the landscape from a completely different perspective.

These experiences are the heart of what makes a stay in Venado different from staying right in busy La Fortuna. They’re authentic, personal, and often the most lasting memories families take home with them.

Day 4: The Magical Blue River—Río Celeste

Prepare for a day of enchantment. About an hour's drive from Casa Venado is one of Costa Rica's most breathtaking natural wonders: the Río Celeste. Located within the Tenorio Volcano National Park, this river is famous for its almost unbelievable turquoise-blue water, a result of a chemical reaction between volcanic minerals.

The main trail in the park is about 6 km (3.7 miles) round-trip and takes you through lush rainforest to several viewpoints. The highlight for most is the Catarata Río Celeste, a powerful waterfall that plunges into a vibrant blue pool. You'll also see the Teñideros, the exact spot where two clear rivers meet and the magic color is born.

Swimming is not allowed inside the national park, but there is a public access point just outside the park where you can take a dip in the blue water. After your hike, grab a well-deserved lunch at one of the sodas near the park entrance. It’s a full day, but seeing that color with your own eyes is something your family will never forget. Day 5: Morning Magic & Departure

On your last morning, don't rush. Wake up with the sun and enjoy one last coffee on the deck. This is often the best time for birdwatching right from the property. Listen for the distinctive calls of toucans, watch hummingbirds buzz the flowers, and see who can spot the most colorful species. It’s a peaceful, beautiful way to start the day.

Enjoy a slow breakfast, pack your bags, and maybe take one last quiet walk down the country lane. If you have time before heading to the airport, you could squeeze in one last adventure, like a guided tour of the incredible Venado Caves, which are just five minutes from our door.

This itinerary is just a suggestion, of course. The best part of having a private home base is the flexibility to make it your own. You can swap days, take a day off to just relax in the hammock, or dive deeper into the many adventures around Arenal.
